International Association for Sustainable Textiles Launches New Certification

Recently, the OEKO-TEX International Association for Eco-friendly Textiles launched a new textile certification called “Made in Green by OEKO-TEX,” which demonstrates that textile manufacturers are capable of producing textiles in a sustainable and socially responsible manner, ensuring the safety of their products for both human health and the natural environment.

The new label has replaced the previous “OEKO-TEX Standard 100+” certification as well as the Spanish “Made in Green by Aitex” label. The Spanish label is currently used by several companies, most notably the fashion brand Mango, which employs it to distinguish its branded products. Following the acquisition of the naming rights, the OEKO-TEX Association and its 16 member institutes will become the exclusive issuers of the new “Made in Green” label. Chinese enterprises can obtain further information about “Made in Green by OEKO-TEX” through TESTEX Swiss Textile Testing Ltd., the official representative of the OEKO-TEX International Association for Eco-Friendly Textiles in China.
Jean-Pierre Haug, Secretary General of the OEKO-TEX Association, pointed out that, as a logical enhancement to the OEKO-TEX product portfolio, the “Made in Green by OEKO-TEX” label enables textile companies to communicate directly to consumers their commitment to producing sustainable products. Since last year, brand owners, manufacturers, and retailers have been using the “STeP by OEKO-TEX” certification to assess, analyze, and audit the sustainable production conditions at their manufacturing facilities. Building on this certification, the OEKO-TEX Association has recently developed the “MySTeP” database, which provides centralized management of existing OEKO-TEX certificates and optimal oversight of sustainability-related key performance indicators (KPIs) across the entire supply chain. Combined with the established “OEKO-TEX Standard 100” certification and a suite of cutting-edge OEKO-TEX services, this comprehensive service package offers textile and apparel companies state-of-the-art support to enhance both product safety and sustainability.
Haug stated that, compared with previous certifications, the fundamental difference of the new label lies in its enhanced transparency for consumers: by providing a unique test number and a QR code, consumers can trace the textile product and its manufacturing process. Moreover, the application requirements for the new label are more stringent than those for the “OEKO-TEX Standard 100+” and “Made in Green by Aitex” labels.
